A professional career, 1985 to 2000

Scott turned professional in 1985 at sixteen, one year after winning the junior division at the Huntington Beach Open and finishing runner-up in junior boys at the WFDF World Championships in Sweden. Over the next fifteen years he won more than 90 PDGA events: the 1994 US Open, Super Tour titles like the 1994 Santa Cruz Masters Cup, back-to-back wins at Texas's Veteran's Park Open, the 1997 Minnesota Majestic, the 1998 Texas State Championships, and national titles in three countries, from the 1996 Swiss Open in Bern to the 1998 Can-Am Finals in Canada and, twenty-five years later, the 2025 SE Asia Championship in Malaysia.

His doubles record may be the deepest in the game: four National Doubles championships (1994, 1995, 1996, and 2001) and three World Doubles titles at the PDGA Worlds in 2000 and 2001, three world championships in three consecutive years, with the 1995 national Tough Shot title on top of that.

He finished runner-up at the PDGA World Championships in both 1997 and 1998, the peak of the Ken Climo era, and was long regarded as one of Climo's toughest rivals. His 1995 Japan Open podium came one step behind Climo himself, and Disc Golfer, the PDGA's own magazine, has called him the greatest player never to win a world title.

He was a face of the sport's early professional era in every way: a landmark equipment sponsorship at his peak, the cover of the Disc Golf Journal in 1993, and a record-setting distance disc now preserved in the Flying Disc Museum.

The distance records

693 feet backhand. 568 feet sidearm. Set in 1998, and still the standard.

Scott remains the only person ever to hold the backhand and sidearm distance records at the same time, a mark recognized by Guinness World Records.

The comeback, 2014 to today

After stepping away in 2000, Scott rejoined competitive play in 2014 and came back all the way: Masters champion at the 2021 Minnesota Majestic, winner of the 2022 Big Money OTB Skins match, and a return to the Pro Open field on the Disc Golf Pro Tour in 2022 as an age 50+ athlete.

The highlights since: a podium finish on the 2023 Euro Tour in Croatia at 53, on Paul McBeth's podium; ranked #99 in the PDGA's Pro Open world rankings at 54, in February 2024; runner-up in the putting competition at the 2024 Pro Worlds; and a professional win in Malaysia in 2025, his third country with a title on the books.

Teaching the game since 1995

Scott has taught disc golf longer than almost anyone in the sport: tens of thousands of players at more than 800 clinics and events, in 49 of the 50 US states and more than 25 countries. He was taking throwing clinics on tour decades before instruction was a normal part of the professional game.

That work became The Stokely Disc Golf Method™: a step-by-step system built on biomechanics, breaking bad habits and muscle memory so every thrower gets a powerful, efficient form that fits their own body. Nobody else in disc golf teaches it this way, because nobody else has been doing it this long.
